.325 RUM idea

I am playing with the idea of doing a 8mm-300rum,the 8mm is a sometimes over looked elk round,I was wondering if you or someone you may have hear of has ever tried this cal.I think it would be the thing for elk,if anyone can share the pro's and con's on this one this it would be great I'm going to call it the 325 Wapiti.Will this cal work?

A friend had one made, just necked up the 300 RUM case. Went with a min. chamber reamer, 28 inch barrel. I load the 220 Sierra game king with either RE 25 or Retumbo. We get around 2900 for speed and great accuracy with this combo. He just hasn't had an Elk show up to use it on. Sure does dump deer and yotes though. Just got lucky this bullet shoots as good as it does because their is not many other choices. Dave

Barnes 180TSX will be my first one I try you can go down to 125 with Hornady,Nosler is my favorites,don't know if I will do it,the Elk here are VERY hard to find and it's a little much for the whitetail,but I like off the wall stuff,

Biggest pro would probably be that it's different.
The 300 and 338 RUM's work fine, so the 325 would too.

Biggest con would be, that compared with the 300 and 338, you're seriously handicapping yourself on bullet selection, and you would pay a steep entrance fee in custom reamer/die costs for the privledge.

I've been dreaming about doing this one for a while now, but I'm really saddened by the figure you quote for the muzzle velocity. I had this idea a long time ago after I read an article Craig Boddington did on the "Big 8" (if I remember the title right). I've owned an 8mm Rem Mag for many years and I love it but I was really impressed with the fact he gets 3200 fps + out of a 27" bbl. So the thinking goes "bigger case, more speed". I assumed that one could get at least 3200 fps with a 220gr bullet and probably more. Now I'm thinking I should just re-barrel my 8 mag and call it good.

It is always cool to make a new round and to try to have something exotic. However, if you are looking to make a purely excellent rifle for the hunter, target shooter and the handloader you should look closer at the available bullets. The only thing wrong with the 8 mm is the fact that bullet selection is fairly low adn that is a major shame. For a while I dreamed of getting a 8mm Rem mag, but this is the biggest reason I put the kabosh on that Idea. My brother in law has a 325 wsm and it is an excellent rifle, but It is much more fun loading my 300wsm because of bullet selection. I would highly recomend looking into the .338 or the 308 calibers, depending on what you are looking for exactly.

8MM bullet selection....

dont know if anyone will read this, as it is an old post. I have just recently gotten back on this Board an am skimming thru all the old ones. The 8 MMrem mag was my favorite go-to gun for elk for years, having killed upwards of 25 with it i can tell you that it is an awsome caliber for these tough critters. cant remember the specifics of my load but i know i used IMR 4350 pwoder and the nosler 200grain partition bullet. i cronied this load at just a tad over 3000fps and i never saw any need to load any other bullet......i used it on dall and bighorn sheep, moose, caribou, mulies, even a pronghorn antelope, and it worked great on all. my farthest shot on an animal was an elk @ 753 yrds. The rifle was a rem 700, factory barrel with a brown precision pillar bedded stock. it shot around .7 inch groups.....alas, i lost it along with about 40 other guns in a house fire....ive been shopping for a new one since......AJ

I did one of those years ago when the ultramag first came out. Best I can remember it got right at 3400 with the 180 ballistic tip which made a great mid range gun. If you are looking for long range this is not the gun you want. Just not enough good bullet choices in 8mm. I shot the 200's in mine at 3200. The 220's would click in about 3000. No way you can get 3200 out of the 220 unless you get a freak barrel which does happen on rare occasion. It is a great elk rifle out to 600 yards or so. Like I say a mid-ranger. Unless you can get those 220's to shoot well. They could get you on out there a bit.
