Does anybody know if there are any wildcats out currently that neck up the WSSM cartridges to 7mm or 30 cal bullets? Along the same lines, does anybody know the case capacity for the wssm cartridge? Thanks.

I believe that the WSSM case holds just a bit nore powder than the standard 243-308 does , I had the thoughts of a 308 WSSM with a 40 deg shoulder , figured that it should be a very effecient case for that bore diameter , giving the same if not more velocity than the 308 win and with possibly better and more consistant ignition.Maybe

but the old 308 is gonna be hard to beat , but woulden't it be great to get close to
30-06 velocities in say a super short Win action and with a 18-20" tube , that would make for one hell of a carry gun.

Thats what I was thinking. Almost to a tee in fact, 40 degree shoulder and all. I don't know about barrel length though. I was thinking a little more than 20". Perhaps 21-22". This is all speculation though, still haven't figured out what I am going to have built.
So what do you think, 7mm or 30 cal? I think, given the bullet weights, the 7mm might hold a ballistic advantage over longer ranges. But who knows.

You may want to try the Nosler Accubonds-I have had great success in my 338 and my 7mm ultra mag.

The 30 WSSM holds 56.5 grains of water to the top of the neck, the 308 holds 56 grains. The 30 WSSM will reach 2700 fps with the 168 AMax. Net gain zero over the 308. The shorter powder column is a theoretical advantage but on paper it doesn't justify the effort.
The 300 WSM holds 79 grains, however, to shoot VLD bullets in a short action requires really deep seating the bullet.
My latest approach splits the difference between the WSM and the WSSM case. The 300 Warthog (short, fat and deadly like the A-10) runs well from a 2.860 mag well and is 1.900 case length. It generates 2900 fps with the 168 AMax with a seating depth of .290. All velocities are from 22" 1:8 twist barrels. The fast twist is needed for the subsonic 240 grain loads.
This cartridge will perform admirably in the suppressed subsonic mode. Unlike the other dedicated subsonic designs, however, the 300 Warthog can reach 2550 fps with the 240 MK and still be supersonic at 1400 yards.
The only downside I have found is the series of form dies required for the brass. So far I have the 6.5mm, 300, 338 and 458 versions and will probably add a 408 soon. I use the Savage Accutrigger WSM action and love the results.

So much for the short answer on water capacity. Sorry for the essay.

My idea stems from the need for a super short and light rifle with decient thump at out to 200yds , her is wat I had planned

Winchester Super short action
18-20" Rock barrel 30 cal
ultra light kevlar style stock
and a Trijcon ACOG scope probably the TA-26

Hoping that the whole rig weighs in at less than 7 lbs , it would be short and probably very accurate , It would be all SS and used for hogs ,sharks and what ever else is needed on the boat.

All in all going with the 308 would probably only add a few oz and I would gain the ability to shoot factory ammo , but it sure would be a neat little gun
Current boat gun is an Encore chambered for 35 Rem , no scope , and an 18" tube

A couple of years ago I chamber 30 wssm for my self to see what it would do. it was to my surprise that it shot very well ! I started with fire form loading what ever bullets I had around the shop and form 50 brass and then went to 208gr Amax hor. bullets and work up a load for them. Avg. 2700fps ES 17 1/2 MOA 100yds with 26" barrel . This cartridge is worth you time if you can find brass. Bill Carrell lightbulb

Quite the dig, indeed. However, the cartridge lives. It's officially called the 300 OSSM Olympic Super Short Mag and it was developed to function in a standard AR-15 platform.
