Hi guys, what are your real world COALs for the 338RUM with the Bergers? If you're shooting SMKs I'm interested in those also. Thanks. gun)

Good,

Just to let you know we are not all ignoring you.....:D

I do have an HS Precision in 338 RUM, I bought it as a light(er) weight rifle for a sheep hunt years ago. It shoots pretty good, but I have other rifles I prefer so it seems I never get around to really seeing what she will do. I have loaded 250 SMK, 300 SMK and 300 Bergers, but just load to fit the mag which is around 3.75. I looked in my log book and could not find where I had measured the chamber for an OAL on those bullets..... so I guess I never have.

Thanks. I'm looking at mag boxes for my ADL and trying to see what the real world lengths are for the factory guns shooting the heavies. I may single shoot for a while just to see if she'll shoot. If she does, I'll work on getting the feeding on.

It's an old post but I'm going to have a custom reamer made. I've been waiting for a rental reamer for almost 9 months now. Does anyone have any suggestions. Single feed doesn't bother me. I'm almost done with a blueprinted 700 rebarrel in 338 rum. I'll be shooting 285's and up. I was thinking 3.80 OAL.

I have a customized and rebarreled rem 700 in 338 rum and my pet load for the 300 Berger's is 87.5grs Retumbo with a COAL of 3.79 and it drives tacks at 300 yards with a average muzzle velocity of 2730. You can push it past 2800 but the primer pockets suffer. It is my favorite gun. I couldn't get the Sierra's to be as accurate in my gun. Generally I like Sierra's but the 300's and I didn't get along.

What barrel length do you have? I'm shooting the 300 with 91 grains o Retumbo at 2730 with a 26" barrel.

26" but my lands were at 3.83. I tried 91 grains but was to hot at that coal. Each gun is different. What brass are you using? When I use Nosler brass my velocities go down to around 2700 with 87.5 grs. of retumbo but with R-P my velocities go up. Don't know why. It took around 100 rounds down tube before my gun got real accurate and velocities went up with same powder charges. Also don't know why, copper fouling I suspect. I also found that the closer I got to the lands the more the pressure went up along with velocities. You may, at 3.75, be far enough back that the pressure isn't as great and thus the lower velocity.
