For you long range guys that shoot to 600 yards, what are the lowest/cheapest model scopes you would buy that maintain zero, have reliable clicks/adjustments, and return to zero? I know Zeiss for instance is great but I simply do not have 1000+ dollars to spend on a scope. I am thinking of a budget between 400-800. Yes that is a huge range. I would love to only spend 400 but I understand it simply may not be possible for what I want so I am willing to save for a while to 800 if needed.

Could you please also recommend model and magnification levels

Out to 600yds? Vortex viper 4-16 would do well.

thanks. I think I have seen that there are a few different viper models. There is a basic viper but do you suggest one of the other model vipers over just a regular viper or will the regular viper do?

SFP or FFP? Reticle preference? Hunting or target?

I'm a Nikon guy for the most part, I shoot out to 600 yards with both my 6-18-40 Buckmaster BDC and 4-16-50 Monarch BDC but I'm maxed out at about 600 yards.
My next choice would be what these other guys are telling you with the Vortex scopes.

This will be hunting. Honestly I do not have a preference as of yet. I have used Mil and MOA a handful of times but my current rifles only are equipped with BDCs and I have only shot to 400 or so yards. I want to start doing "real" long range hunting haha with adjusting for hold and wind and what not. This will be my first true long range scope. I will obviously practice lots before I attempt on an animal but yes, the goal is for hunting deer out to 600.

Vortex are phenomenal scopes for the money. I have several of their products and am impressed with them all. I will definitely be buying more in the future.

Vortex scopes are probably about the best option for the money. The Bushnell elite line is also good. They usually have exposed fat turrets on them. Probablly the cheapest is the 10x model that is a straight 10 power. But back to the vortex....I would susgest at least the vortex viper HS LR or the HS-T. These have zero stops and probably have enough elevation to get you out to 1000yrds. I use a 20moa rail and can get out to 1500yrds on my 300 rum. only down fall about the HSLR is its 1/2 moa adjust on the elevation.

I would recommend going to a store that sells what you are looking for and take them outside if possible and look through them over all powers at the distances you want to shoot. I found that the couple Vortex HS series that I have used clarity past 16 power and 400 yards was unacceptable for the cost. Changed to a Zeiss for LR shooting and it was worth it. Vortex fit their price point very well. Kept the 4-16x44 and put it on my .243 and it works great. Anyone looking for a $400 scope, vortex gets my vote.

I recommend the Conquest HD5's. Should have written that one down.

Vortex is great. The viper hslr in 4-16sfp goes for $600.00+/-. It is a great scope for the money and vortex has the best return policy period if you ever have a problem with it.
