Just wanted to share my partners first big game animal a Himalayan bull Tahr.
We decided to back pack into a public land area to try and get Mirella(my partner) a Bull. She has done a little bit of hunting an shooting before but never got a "big game" animal.
It was a rather strenuous walk in to our high camp by a little tarn but was definitely worth it. Pretty typical east coast Tahr country. steep and rocky!
We set up camp by this alpine tarn in an area I had hunted a couple of times before.
we soon started to see mobs of nannies and young tahr all over the show which was a good sign.
Mirella took a young Tahr just by camp so we had some meat for the next few nights.
The first couple of days we spent glassing and searching for a bull.
It was late summer so it was pretty warm still and the bulls are separated from the nannies which can make the old guys very hard to find.
Tahr hunting is usually alot of glassing with steep climbs in between.
We had some pretty good luck with the weather with some awesome sunrises and sunsets up high.
After 3 days in the mountains we saw alot of nannies and young guys and a few mature bulls but couldnt find any really good old bulls so we decided that mirella should Take the next mature bull we saw. So we spotted a bull with a group of young guys and set off. Stalking can be hard and alot of people think you have to shoot long shots(400+) to get Tahr. But with patience its not all that hard to get close. We closed the distance to 140 yards and Mirella got ready with my Tikka .243. The .243 is kind of minimum to shoot bull Tahr with as old bulls are 300lbs+ and Tough as hell. But with good bullets and shot placement I have had good success with the .243 on all NZ species I have hunted.
The Tahr had spotted us by now and were making abit of a move for it, Mirella pulled off a awesome shot on the Bull and he rolled after 5 steps. Was a perfect shot. Smashed his shoulders and lungs.
Here she is with her Bull
Really pleased with how the 87gn interbonds work in my .243. we found the projectile had broke both shoulders and was just on the skin on the other side.
All in all it was a awesome hunt so proud of Mirella for nailing her first big game animal. Thanks for reading guys.(sorry for any spelling mistakes haha)
