Re: PA Elk Hunting
You guys need to get in touch with Leroy "Butch" Stotler of Apollo, PA and ask him how he did it. He is the PA Game Commission Deputy Game Protector from Westmoreland County that just "happened" to draw a bull tag for the first Pa Elk Hunt. Ya' don't think it was fixed do ya'? He is now retired as a Deputy Game Protector, as his age and health prevents him from working in the field.

Re: PA Elk Hunting
I to have been putting in since it started, better chance to win the powerball, who knows though. funny thing i read in the pa. regs. on min. elk cal.- if I'm reading it right you have to use a min. of 130 gr. bullet and .270 ca.??? does that mean I can use a .357 marlin lever action but not my .257 WBY, or someone else a .264 mag.???

Re: PA Elk Hunting
I was drawn in 04 for unit #9, I went the DTY route and ended up with a 7x7 that netted 389 and change. Spent 5 weeks scouting and shot him the first morning with tha 338 win mag. my parents had given me for high school graduation 25 years prior. You have to play to win...

ive never applied for a tag and doubt i ever will. the whole thing is a turnoff for me.
being a guide means you know all the roads in the area and whose yards the elk have been visiting. thats a fact not a joke.
theres no doubt the herd has grown to a large number. much larger than the game commission admits to. they have drasticly reduced the size of the deer herd in that area. yet the elk herd has grown dramaticly.
its common to see herds of 25 or more in our yard.
millions of dollars have been spent promoting the elk herd. by way of large visitors centers, elk viewing areas and so forth. take a ride up winslow hill and see for yourself. and there are other locations also.

You hit it perfect. Its like our political bear hunt here in Md. We have more problems than you can think of with bear here in western Md. So we have a bear season like the big Pa. elk hunt 15.00 non refudable draw for around 50 or so tags. Problem is most drawn are people from Baltimore who arent wanted on private ground around here and everyone goes to the next county to hunt and our numbers grow higher in our county. Our state make around 200k on this silly stunt. If they would let the locals take care of it we wouldnt have a bear problem. Yes, i like your high priced elk viewing staton game commision claims they dont have money i can see why.
