+1 ... Our group all live at approx 800 ft elevation. We camp at 8500 ft and hunt up from there. We down a LOT of water on the drive out, take water with us everywhere we go when we are in Colorado, and set up drink coolers with decaf sweet tea and kool aid on the front porch. In three years, no one has had any debilitating effects related to AMS.
A friend of mine is a serious backpacker who has hiked the Annapurna Circuit a couple times (up to 18,000 ft). His advice is to drink water until your urine comes out clear. And then drink some more....
