Opening day Nevada Antelope

6:55 AM opening day first Antelope we saw was so far away that it was hard to see with your unaided eyes. So we kind of drove up parrallel to it. I found it with my scope on 12 power and turned it up to 20 power to shoot

long shot near classic broad side. The buck was walking away and sometimes turning sideways to me. I was sitting with my rifle bipods down. Nearly level ground. It smashed a major rib on entry side is why the hole is so big. The bullet hit and shattered rib on the far side. We retrieved the bullet when skinning it. Bone or shrapnel put a small hole on the far side. That is the blood on the ground which sprayed out of the exit wound 20 feet. After the shot it kind of stepped forward and low arched its back and fell over without a kick.

My rifle is a 243. Time of flight to 400 yards is .40seconds. So at its walking speed I rough figured about 12 inches in .40 seconds and bullet drop of about 12 additional inches with my rifle zeroed in at 250 yards. The bullet hit right about where I wanted it to with my lead and added elevation. Since he was moving I didn't have time to dope in the scope and it was not major corrections anyway.

I used a 243 100 gr spbt at 3200 fps using .430 BC numbers The recovered bullet retained 83 grains and it is a 1/3 as long as it started out as.

Re: Opening day Nevada Antelope

I bought this Rem SPS varminter for Christmas. I spent allot of days on the chrono and then 100's upon 100's of rounds at the bench rest range out to 400 yards I got these hunting 100 grain boat tails to shoot less than 2.2 inch 10 shot groups right on the bulls eye groups at 400 yards

I have a 9 1/4 twist rate

This is a 6 X 24 with a 6 mm objective

Really good long range jack rabbit gun

My buddy and I bought our selves identical Remingtons for Christmas

I drew Nevada area 41-42 I also have to wait another 5 years. In the heat of the day its been 95. So I wanted to get done and back home. It was skinned, quartered and packed in ice chests before 8:15 am and on the road home.

I did not even measure. I already have the 86 score mounted Boone & Crockett from Area 33 (Nevada) about 15 years ago. Then South Dakota hunts.

I can do a fresh measurement tonight.

Re: Opening day Nevada Antelope

I'm off my five year wait and applying again. I've got a friend took an 80 something out of 33 about the same time you did. Went on another trip with a friend got a decent one out of 35 or 36 about 10 years ago. Interesting animal, and an interesting time of year to chase them. Thanks
