The Coues Whitetail deer. Found in AZ, NM and Mexico. Nicknamed the grey ghost of the desert and the poor man's sheep hunt. Very tough country and very smart deer. Very addicting to hunt.

To hunt or kill?

And if you mean hunt, Trophy size?

I have hunted blacktails in calif and Muley's and Whitey's in Idaho. Of those three true mature near book sized bucks, I find Muley's are the hardest. Blacktails are by far the hardest just to find even a decent one to put your sights on,

Mule deer. I've killed hundreds of whitetails, and though they are tough, the mulie buck gets my vote.

I've seen a big old 7 year old mulie take 3 shots to the lungs at 200 yards before he even noticed.

Derek, Having lived in both the midwest and now Montana, I think you need a bigger rifle with Bergers

NNNOOOOO, I wasn't the shooter. It was my friend's hunting buddy in Colorado. The buck took 3 bullets from a 25.06.

If my name was Scott, my nickname would be one-shot Scott. I totally kick ass in the field.

Re: The toughest species of deer

I think a high country muley. Where I'm at there are very few of them and it is very rugged. This was a area with son. I shot a big buck, but had to shoot sort of , off a alder branch and so I had to go find him. He stood up out of his bed @ 30 yrds and I HIT HIM W/325, son said you missed, knew I did not so I put one on point of shoulder next, that did it. These bucks are very massy in body from terrian, buck was 26'' around neck @ ears
