i guess you win some and loose some.
being in n.z we can buy a 338 or a suppresor as easy as paying for it. (for how long, who knows)
but many of us are moving to oz, to get a job to be able to pay for them.

I'm looking at getting a 300 win mag but now I'm worried the bloody government won't allow me to have it. Has anyone ever had this problem? I'm thinking if they reject my application for a 300 win mag I should get a lawyer involved may cost abit of money but i think it would be worth a try.

Any advice would be great I already own 3 firearms and there's talks of restricting the amount of guns one person can own or so the rumors go.
I feel your pain…We in Vic have it all, my dad owns everything from 9.3x72 to 22, getting a 338 is no problem (IN VIC) even the 50 MG if you’ve been good…

HI Aussie_Hunter, not sure if you got your 338lap yet, if not, it is all in the application. Don't talk about long range, just talk about what you have and how the 338 will be more humane. I attach an additional letter when making an application. The 30-378 wby mag was easy, just explain what you have and how it is limited in penetrating bush ect. WA police have advised me just last week that I can license a 416 barrett if I like.

Good luck

Living here in the US, we do not have the troubles you're having. I have a safe full of guns here ranging from 22lr to 300RUM in rifle and 9mm to 44mag in pistols and the government doesn't know about any of them.

Hopefully another Aussie will chime in with something more helpful.

Move to the U.S.??
Wrong. I take it you live in a glass house. They already know what you have and if they don't know exactly what you have, you have probable cause by posting what you just posted.

If Obama's socialistic government comes to fruition, they will be stopping by your place with a probable cause search and seizure warrant or perhaps nothing at all. Just we want to search your premises Mr. Trebark (or whatever your legal name is and I don't really care) because they have reasonable suspicion and you've confirmed that.... (This is a high traffic firearm related forum so it's most likely spot monitored by big brother...)

Everything I own is registered, cataloged, insured and locked up. It has to be, I possess an FFL and a CCW. I know the rules and the consequences for violating the rules.

Your comment 'move to the U.S. is misleading. True, this is one of the very few civilized countries on this globe that allows individuals to possess multiple firearms in any caliber they choose to (excepting full automatic weapons and heavy military hardware like missiles and warheads) Thats in a decidedly downhill trajectory...

Back in the day (not too long ago), Australia had basically the same per capita gun ownership as we did (back then) but the government thought it more prudent that the citizens surrendered their Firearms (which they did) and then the government put binding restrictions in place (which is exactly whats occurring here).

So, the folks in Oz only have themselves to blame...

and our complacency will get us in the same boat before long but thats for another day.

Re: How the hell did use get a .338

My friends haven't had any problems at all with their 338s in NSW. I,m looking at getting a Cheytac next. I went to some gunshops in Sydney last week and was looking at some 50 BMGs which have given me some ideas. I was thinking, if it is the fact that it is a 338 Lapua which is causing problems in W.A, can you get the name changed to a 8.3mm Express or something like that to get away from the military sniper name tag?
When I had a 50 BMG a few years ago, it was listed as a 499 Jongmans just in case there would be any future problems.
