Contact Jack Atcheson and Sons, out of Montana. Speak to Keith Atcheson. My buddy and I have used them since the 80's with great success. Keith is an Africa specialist. There are a lot of horror stories with African safaris. Your outfitter is critical.

Re: Need African Outfitter For Safari

Hunting in Africa is easy, and animals plentiful. "Toyota Safari". Trouble is clients are taken as suckers. With reputed outfitters, you should get most of desired animals trophy quality. But expect to pay more than agreed upon, somehow or whatever. Best time to hunt is May thru June. After that it can get pretty cold the further south you venture. Since May is some time ahead, I recommend that you join the Safari Club International, and go to their annual meet in Las Vegas in late January. Don't be in a haste to book, but let it mellow in. Talk to guys you meet and inquire how the outfitter is. On the whole, I enjoy hunting with American and Canadian outfitters more.

Re: Need African Outfitter For Safari

Last year I was in South Africa and hunted with Johan Dreyer for 10 days. I stayed at their Tuskers Lodge near Grahamstown in Easter Cape region.
I hunted with my S&W 629 only, and got ten non-tropy animals. This was a very nice huntingtrip, with highly skilled and nice PH and trackers.

I highly recomend to hunt with them. I hunted four different game ranches , dependent on which animal to hunt.

I will hopefully hunt with Dreyers in 2014, if my plan succeed

best regards
Harald

Re: Need African Outfitter For Safari

Thank you, Harald, for the kind words! While we accept the compliment of animals being plentyful in South Africa ( it reflects on good management and a sustainable utilisation policy ) I reject the generalisation that hunting here is "easy". Such an opinion is normally formed from hear say or very limited experience of African hunting. Anybody who calls hunting a buffalo in the Zambezi valley thickets , baiting a leopard, tracking a tusker , stalking a vaal rhebuck in the Winterberg mountains or closing in on an old kudu bull in the Fish River valley bushveld "easy" has either never done it or hunted with an extremely competent PH and tracker. The beauty of Africa is that it offers something for everybody's ability and finances and the difference between being a very happy hunter and disgruntled one is choosing the ideal compromise between your expectations and budget as well as having a positive attitude.. That ,and the right, ethical outfitter of course.
