Indiana DNR reports 124,000 deer killed in 2007 hunting season
The DNR says hunters killed 124,427 deer during the 2007 season, which runs from October to January. That's the third-best season on record. Hunters took 125,381 deer in 2006. The record of 125,526 was set in 2005.
DNR deer research biologist Chad Stewart says he anticipated a significant drop in the number of deer taken by hunters due to an outbreak of Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease, a virus transmitted by biting flies.
The virus is not transmitted to humans.
The deer season is divided into periods for firearms, muzzleloaders and archery.
