And where is your 100yd and further energy readings for the .22Mag? Leaving out vital info does not make the case partner.

Hornady:

17 HMR® 17 gr V-MAX

Item Number 83170 Weight 0.44 lbs H.I.T.S. # (100 Yard Value) 26 Ballistic Coefficient (G1) .125 Sectional Density .155 Test Barrel Length (inches) 24

Muzzle 100 200 2550/245 1901/136 1378/72
22 WMR 30 gr V-MAX™

Item Number 83202 Weight 0.53 lbs H.I.T.S. # (100 Yard Value) 36 Ballistic Coefficient (G1) .095 Sectional Density .085 Test Barrel Length (inches) 24 Quantity 50/Bx
Muzzle 100 200 2200/322 1421/134 1002/67

Either way this is a ******* match. The 17 because of its velocity and slightly flatter flight path is easier for people to hit targets with, but I would be ashamed if I could not hit a coke can with every rifle in my safe at 100 yards. Both the 22 mag and 17 hmr are fun to shoot, there is no comparison to a centerfire. My 17 Remington throws 20gr pills at 4200 fps, but the 223 is a better overall caliber.

Hmm, need to read more of this thread I reckon. Didn't know there was a heated argument going on.
But I'm with you, .17HMR over .22Mag.

My answer was geared toward .17HMR vs .22Mag.
If by .223 you mean .223Rem, you are absolutely correct. No comparison at all.

Thanks Doug; yea to add to the apologies, I should not have included anything but rim fire in my post.

Since I have all three; I prefer the 17 HMR. YMMV

The 223 is not overall better, it's costlier and a lot noisier with more recoil. No trade off at all IMO.
