I'm not new to long range shooting, but new to hunting that way. I've been shooting 500+ yards for about 3 decades and am recently starting to really home in on what makes or breaks the shot.

For most of my hunting, the last 35 years or so, I've mostly hunted where sight distances were under 300 yards except in the sage and usually under 150 yards in the timber. MOST of my game is taken under 125 yards. Some as close as 15 feet.

I've shot at buckets, drums and other inanimate targets since i was old enough to shoot...and the distances kept getting longer. Most recently i've been entertaining myself with shooting at 1-gallon milk jugs from 600-650 yards...but the places TO shoot at distance are RAPIDLY diminishing. In the last 6 months I have been chased out of a half dozen places to shoot...due to changing ownership or policies. I am now down to 2 places, both of which require 50+ miles drive then an hour hike with my gear...which cools the enthusiasm.

Even ranges in the PS with distances over 200 yards are almost non-existant. I have been on the wait-list for one near-to-home for going on 5 years now.

Now i drive East, over the mountains, to get ranges/distances that i can work with. This limits my distance shooting rather severely.

I shoot a R-700HB in .308, an R-77 and a Win 70 in 300 WM and same set in .338WM with a Win 70 in .375 H&H bringing up the rear.

Lately have been working on Cooper's Art of the Rifle skill sets as that has ranges i can use.
