I would go with 24" as a minimun as for load data I will check what I have tonight when I get home. What bullets do you plan on using?

24" barrel, re 22 or 19, 140 hp. i think sierra makes it. would a 8 twist work with lighter bullets 130gr? or would you go to 8 1/2 twist. pacnor offers both. i dont want to get into a situation where throat errosion will be a major problem more than normal for an overbore caliber

Re: 6.5x284 norma

A 1:8 will handle 130gr bullets and give optimum stability for the 140 VLD's. Minimum barrel length of 24". I like 26" not including a brake. For hunting, the Berger Hunting 140gr VLD's give the best BC, and perform very well on game from 200-1000 yards. I assume you are using a long action. Have your gunsmith throat the rifle to handle the 140 Bergers, and it will handle the Sierras, and 130gr. bullets as well. The cartridge OAL with a Berger to the lands will be 3.18-3.19". I use H4831sc, 51-53 gr, and Retumbo, 57-59gr. Both will give velocities in the 2950-3000FPS range with a 26" barrel, low ES, and excellent temperature stability.

DON'T BE TOO QUICK ON THE POWDER CHOICE. While Re 22 is excellent, your rifle may not respond the best with it. You can get by with 26 - 27 inches. Over 28 is unnecessary, despite what some may claim. Hope you chose an 8-inch twist. If you picked 9, start with the 123-grain Sierra MK.
