Re: Sitka Gear

Never hunted Montana in Nov, I'm just guessing that it could be fairly cold. I would say go with a set of the base layers and then the 90% over that.

I'm huning Colorado in Sept and plan on the light base layer and Asent pants and zip-t. I'll bring the vest along for those chilly mornings.

Give Scott and Sagecreek Outfitters a call see if he has any sitka left over still. You'll just have to google sagecreek and my webmaster wont let me on that site to get the number for you.

Re: Sitka Gear

Thanks for the help guys! Using the Sitka Suppliers that were previously mentioned in this post I found some great deals. I have on order a Jacket, Gloves and Core top. Paying full price for this gear is a tough pill to swallow but using that advice saved me about 40-50%, thats big bucks when you are talking about a 250$ jacket. I am really pumped to get it and even more excited to try it out this fall.

I personally prefer to go light and layer. I can always take off a layer if I get a little warm. I do have some places that I do wear my 90% stuff if I am just sitting. Most of the time I just layer under my Ascent pants and zip-t's.

A midweight vest is great for layering. I often just wear it when the temps rise in the afternoon and have worn it under the rain gear for a little extra warmth.

I have worn a lot of different gear over the years and to this day ... Sitka is the best. This years camo is awesome and the new materials are supposed to be even better. Good luck!
Your wearing the Ascent pants in N. Idaho? How are they for waterproof? I just bought a pair of Ascents for early fall and then a pair of the much more expensive Nimbus pants for rain/snow wear but I would love to hear that Ascents will keep you dry.

Re: Sitka Gear

The ascent pants have a durible water resistant treatment to them. So they will work if its just sprinkleing or walking through some wet grass. They are synthetic so they dry super fast. The Nimbus are completely water proof.

Re: Sitka Gear

I got a couple of different pieces of Sitka gear that I ordered last week. So far I am impressed. It is Light, tough, and very comfortable. However I am cautiously optomistic about its warmth. The Celcius jacket I have seems like a really light coat. Like I said though I am staying optomistic and hitting "The I Believe" button that it will keep me warm. All the hundreds of differnt reviews I have read all say that it has kept them warm so I am going to give it a try. The wool is still coming with me on my Elk hunt this fall though...just in case.

Re: Sitka Gear

I picked up a bunch of Sitka gear this year so this fall it will get a workout. I'll be bringing my wool along as well just in case but so far on some shed hunting trips this stuff is awesome.

Re: Sitka Gear

Sounds like you got a good deal. IMO, only fools pay retail! : )

Sitka gear is great stuff. I don't have any of their jackets, but the lowers work work great.

My layering system:
Base Layer: Smart Wool Midweights
Outer Layer: Sitka Ascent Pants
with a pair of Gaiters over the pants
Optional Extra Warmth: Patagonia Puff Pants (only take when you know it will be cold (i.e. consitently below 30*)
Rain Layer: Sitka Rain Pants (not the new ones, the old ones they discontinuted)

Wearing all layers makes me feel a little like the Michelin man, but about the only time I pull the Puff Pants on is when I know I will be sitting for a while... The Ascents are not waterproof, but water resistant for sure. I like the way they fit and they are pretty darn durable. I have worn mine in the Chugach and the Brooks Range in wide variety of conditions with no complaints. I am guessing they are probably a 30-60 day pant durability wise. So depending on your use they will last a season or two...

There are lot of good options out there for rain gear. IMO, Sitka Rain Gear is way to expensive. I got my Sitka Rain pants on a SUPER clearance sale. Otherwise I would have a pair of Patagonai Rain Shadow or something similar. The Mountaineering companies are years ahead of the hunting manufactures when it comes to backpack hunts..... Sitka is great as it is the 1st step in bridging that gap, only problem is they know they are unique and you pay for it... Only way I pick it up is sales like you got!
