I give Kimber Montana a vote too. In about 2004 when Kimber came out with the 8400 Montana in 300 WSM, I had to have one. Melvin Forbes of Ultra-Light Arms was credited with designing the Montana stock. On the scales, Rifle, Kimber Bases, Leopold Rings, 2.5X8 Leopold Scope, Uncle Mikes Nylon Sling and 4 180 gr. Shells = 7 1/4 lb. Good Luck in choosing your rifle and Happy Hunting.

Don't let folks talkyou out of the Tikka. I have 6 and everyone is sub MOA. I have one in 30-06 and like all my others is a tack driver. Put good glass on it and hunt!

Re: Light weight midrange rifle ??'s

I'm planing on trimming my Rem 700 .308 barrel down to 20" and replacing my 4-16X50mm Nikon with a 2.5-10X42mm. Should have my 7mm Rem Mag with 26" barrel all together soon and it will get the larger scope. I've packed in the .308 as is a few times and the weight and length tend to get to you. At 8000' the .308 and certainly a .30-06 should easily get to your 500 yard range.

At those ranges and for backpacking a short light contour barrel and "normal" sized scope I think just about any factory rifle would be acceptable particularly with a lighter composite stock.

Re: Light weight midrange rifle ??'s

I have a Tikka 300WM and love it, mine is a 695 and it shoots 1/2 MOA when I do my part. The T3 is great and I had one in 338 it was lively but I traded it away as it didn't get used. Genuine sub MOA as well. Can't go wrong but get a spare mag!

SP6x6 that is an awesome buck well done!

Regards,

Mog

A bit late in the day,if you can find one a swissarms SHR980 Alpine rifle would fit the bill.
