338 long range hunting bullets

Hi boys, this is me from Northern Italy. It is 2 years I am struggling to find out the ultimate medium-big game hunting bullet, for my HS HTR in 338 Lapua and shots between 500 and 1.000 meters. The problem is Lapua Scenar and Lock base 250 grs, I use for target shooting, have such a fantastic BC they are difficult to replace with a Huntig bullet.
I am looking for something with a similar BC (675), able to expand at low velocities. OK also custom bullets, but here in Europe it is so difficult to have news and testing material !

I'd suggest the Sierra 300 SMK until something better comes along.

There are several bullet makers in the U.S. working on high BC 338 Cal bullets with aluminum tips.

Richard at Wildcat Bullets is as close to production as anyone is. These bullets are in the 265 grain class, I think.

Another fella on this board is working on the same thing.

Only time will tell.

I have them in my hand. 265's & 280's They look nice. Surprisingly enough I expected to see them a lot longer than the 300 SMK but they aren't. Looks like they might still feed out of a repeater. Don't know how tough it would be to get them overseas though. For that matter I don't even know what the price is going to be.

I'm in hopes of having the rifle late this week or early next week. Then I'll have break in, load recipe for 300 SMK's, then I'll get to these.

I'd send you the 265's if ya want (I have 11). You might be able to get them tested before I do. BC was to be .78 ish @ sea level for the 265's (going on memory). I'm saving the 280's to test. Send me a PM if you are interested.

I read somewere in the forum they are planning to produce a 250 grs accubond. Know something abuot it ?
And about Lost River products ?

About the MK 300, It' s the first bullet I tested, having a 1/10 twist, but I had bad results. The rifle shoots very well with Scenars and Lock base 250, instead.
The problem is for hunting purposes, I killed some good animals with scenars (the biggest, a kudu bull at 500 yards), but the bullet has a very particular terminal ballistics, and over that distance, or on white tail sized animals, it does not perform well on the terminal side.
(anybody interested, I can tell more).

i tried a box of Hornady's 250gr match bullets a while ago. they shoot very well, have a BC of .675, that's what they claim, and the hollow point is larger than most. this seems to be the ticket for good expansion. didn't do any terminal testing yet. saving all my milk jugs to test the Aluminum tipped bullets first.
