Pics of your packing/stalking rifles

Want to build a lightweight packing/stalking rifle and want to get some ideas. Can you guys post your go to rifle when you go out with a pack on a stalk (with specs please, especially weight). My lightest at the moment is 12.5 lb Savage .243 build.

Thanks,
John

Re: Pics of your packing/stalking rifles

There are two rifles in my battery that are primarily hunting rifles. One of them is a 'carry-rifle' and the other is a rifle built for prone shooting. Although they are very different, I would consider both stalking rifles as I have stalked deer and antelope with both.

Very nice! Have a big gun in build and looking for a lighter weight that is easier for off-hand. I was torn between the 280AI and the 284, but just got some 6.5x284 brass so I think I'm going 284.

The 284win or 6.5x284 are great rounds. Also, they both can work a short-action. You can cut a little weight as compared to the long-actions.

Re: Pics of your packing/stalking rifles

Go with a 284 win, then throw a #4 contour Brux barrel on that LA and throat it with .188 freebore to shoot the 180 hybrids if you want to down the road. Grab a couple boxes of 162 amaxs, couple lbs of H4350, seat them .050" off the lands in Lapua brass with either a WLR or fed 210 primer and start at 52 grains, and work up to find your load. If you want a brake, i recommend the mini magnum muscle brake, available from Piercision Rifles Enjoy.

Re: Pics of your packing/stalking rifles

My walking rifle for hunting in brush and dense cover is a 356 model 94AE Winchester lever action. Knocks the hell out of anything within 100 yds. For just a bit longer reach heavier game is my 350 Rem Mag model 7. My Custom 7 SAUM does the longest I will ever need on the East Coast.
