Thank you. Next week taking nephew and his rifle to Wyoming to see if we can hit a few prairie dogs, coyotes and rocks that are waaaaaaay over there!

Will blog about the trip in a new thread and will post a link to that thread here. In preparation for our Wyoming trip, the optic on nephew's rifle has been temporarily upgraded to a 6.5-20x50 Leupold MK4 scope.

Re: Nephew's Transformed Rifle!

Optics on this rifle have recently been upgraded to a Leupold VX3 4.5-14x14 that the Leupold Custom Shop added a TMR reticle and M1 turrets. The scope came off My 280 - Updated!

Also, this rifle shoots the Hornady Custom factory ammo with the 130grain SSTs very well, the bullet recently failed to kill a deer. This is a known flaw in tipped bullets in that they sometimes blow up on the hide of the animal and deer just gets up and walks away. Although I'd heard of this I had never actually seen it until my nephew shot a deer at 335 yards. We watched the deer hit the ground. When we went to get the deer...it was gone! it just got up and walked away.

As a result of this experience, I've been reloading 130grain Sierra Game Kings with 59grains of H4831SC which sends them at 2900+ with good ES and .5moa accuracy. This will be the new hunting load and hopefully no deer will walk away from a well placed shot.

Re: Nephew's Transformed Rifle!

That sucks! I had a similar situation last year wit an A-max at about 500. Watched it hit, and watched get away. No blood!!

Interesting. Although it's a fairly common experience for ballistic tip and SST bullets to fail, it's a rare occurence for an Amax to fail. Like your experience though, the SST didn't even draw blood. We searched for that deer for hours and never found a drop of blood.

Re: Nephew's Transformed Rifle!

I received a Remington 700 ADL .30-06 for Christmas about 4 years ago, and since then mounted a Leupold VX-I scope on it, and hunted with it for 4 years without a morally acceptable shot showing itsself. I got interested in shooting more proficiently, and tossed around the idea of buying a new stock and having it bedded for a long time. This post put me over the top, I ordered the stock and had an older gentleman (friend of my grandfather) teach me to glass bed. I used Accraglas Gel by Brownells, his glass bedding of choice.

I created this account just to thank you for posting this, and making me take the plunge! I'm more excited about shooting than ever and am going tomorrow to see how she groups for me!

I copied just a little Trebark, thanks again!
