Jerry, since you seem to have some knowledge on the Stevens 200 actions what do you think about the small shank and the 338 Edge? and do you know of any barrel maker chambering this round? I have built 5 Mausers to date but after buying a Savage in 223 for p-dogs what can I say I'm hooked! the Mausers take a load of work but hey they shoot good once your done ;-) I would love to find a barrel that I could screw on at home but I'll have to send it to someone for the break cause this boy ain't gonna hold onto an Edge without a break.

Great article by the way! got the little brother building his Savage into a 308. Later,

Kirk

I am uncertain whether the RUM case would be fine in a standard shank action. Savage did build a whack of them then changed to the larger shank.

By this example, I would suggest you take Savages lead. However, I am unaware of any small shank RUM type action blowing up. I think the Lazz monsters were in the standard shank too????

I have heard that the larger shank actions have had issues with the nut breaking cause they are now thinner. The action and nut outer diameter hasn't changed so not sure what strength advantage these offer.

I think the bolt is the same too???

Contact the various barrel makers offering Savage pipes. Ask them if they will make such a cannon. Go by their response.

Savageshooters.com may also offer more info. Post your findings here as it would be helpful.

Best Group Ever at 200yds

Been working with a new Pac Nor prethreaded/chambered SS Super match heavy barrel and got this awesome test group at 200yds. My best 3 shot group ever at this distance.

The math is off. Should be 0.056" and 0.028min.

Nothing fancy in the components - 80gr Bergers, Win brass, CCI 450 primers, Varget. Lee collet die and RCBS standard seating die for a 221 Fireball.

Rifle is a box stock Stevens 200 bedded into a Choate Varminter stock. Trigger group is by Rifle Basix (ver 2). Just installed the barrel at the loading bench. Optics an Elite 4200 AO 6x24 in Burris rings.

Other groups show the pipe can shoot in the 1's so am very pleased for a long range varminting rig. Gives you an idea what these budget rigs can do.

My goal is to see if I can push the 80gr Bergers and Amax to a mile accurately.

Jerry

you need to decide what and how you want to use this rifle. For the size of game, distance, terrain, style of hunting.

There are precious few bad rifles, just applications. You don't use a spoon when you need a knief.

I read a recent write up on the Marlin XL7 and it looks very interesting and quite the Savage copy cat. For the money as a general hunting rifle, how can you go wrong?

If you want to reach out with greater precision, there are many other options from modifying what you have, buying a factory rifle that has desired characteristics or going full meal deal and a custom.

You might want to do some more research into what you want out of your rifle then just adj to suit.

Good luck...

Jerry

Hi new to sight awsome artical. Ok i was going to build a .223 or .308 with similar set up at artical. Well i have never built a rifle my self. I was going to use a stevens for my starting platform, but i was given 2 Rem. model 600 actions. Problem is I'm not sure what face they are. I miked them and the bolt face measures .285 Does that sound right? If so is that small or large bolt face. If its small can I open it up to large? Might have what i need to get started. Thanks for the great info

great article jerry......

i am wanting to build a custom rifle this summer and i need your expert advise. i have much enjoyed reading your great writings and i value your opinion. my passion is hunting coyotes here in central colorado in the winter. i want a rifle that i can dial in and make kills on them varmints at 1000 yds...i want to do a full custom build using your recomendations starting with what bullet/caliber combination you would prefer. my thoughts tend to lean toward a 6mm bullet, but am not stuck on that......what cartridge should i get to chamber the gun in? gonna go with the savage action and do all the work myself....tell me how you would proceed.....thanks in advance, i have already learned a ton of stuff from your great articles....AJ
