Thumbs down

Thanks for taking the time to post this very informative article, I have read it multiple times. I had a question on the bushnell scopes (4200 series) are you taking the caps off to dial-I did not see any 4200's with tactical type target turrets? If you do,do you hunt with them off, are they snow/rain proof? How about the 5-15 3200 tactical scope, any feedback on it yet? Thankyou

Thanks for the kind words guys.

I do hunt with the caps off when I am waiting in my stand. I just dial up depending on where I see the animal. I leave the caps on when I am walking about.

Haven't given it much hard weather testing so can't say personally if caps off is weather proof. Supposed to be.

I am waiting for my 30mm tactical version to come in. I like the specs and look forward to see how it works. The huge turrents would be very easy to use in the field too.

Long Range Rifle On A Budget, by Jerry Teo

I started with a Remington 700, 300 WM SPS. I have heard that stock is not strong enough to float the barrel and glass the bed, would it be better to float and bed that stock or buy another stock?

If you are on a budget, you can easily modify the Rem stock to work wonderfully. The forends is a bit soft but can be stiffened by epoxying some arrow shafts. You can also add 1/4" plywood to the exterior if you don't mind a wide forend like a varmint rifle.

Either way will make a very serviceable stock.

Open the forend channel so there is at least 1/8" gap between the stock and forend. With stiffening and that much gap, little chance of the stock hitting the barrel during recoil.

The arrow shaft solution costs less then $10.

My First Custom Long Range Hunting Rifle

I need anyones advise on this gun, good or bad, the gun is not complete. First, the action is Ruger M77 SA, I can't change that it is the stock gun I am sacrificing. I am thinking of 7 wsm, or 6.5 wsm,I have a friend who has both these barrels in his custom shop. The 7mm is a douglas premium #3 the 6.5mm is a shilen #5. I have bought the scope a LRS 4-16 Burris signature ballistic plex, I got a super deal on it!! The only custom stock that I have found for a Ruger SA is a Hogue are they any good?? Thanks for any help!!<`{{{<

If you are set on the Ruger, then go for it. you did not say which cal the rifle is presently in. If a 308, the bolt face and extractor will need work to function the WSM's. Also, the mag, follower and feed rails will need massaging. That can get expensive in a hurry.

There are laminated stocks for the ruger - Boyds, Richardson microfit and others. Composite stocks are likely available so do some snooping.

Both cals are nice. I prefer the 7mm for hunting but recoil is a bit higher.

Look at all of your costs. You may find that selling the Ruger and buying an action set up for the cartridge you want to play with is cheaper in the long run.
