Have had and shot all types of rifles & calibers - went to Single-Shot Rifles years ago / they say, watch the man that owns one rifle, he probably knows how to use it. That also fits the Single-Shot Shooter ....

I have rifles with detachable mags but they are not needed. If you need more than a floorplate model will hold go to the range and practice your shooting.

I use both and it isn't an issue as long as one is familiar with the specific system. I did have reservations to begin with because the detachable magazine I have cannot be top loaded whilst in the rifle. The manufacturer explained to me that the reason for this was that single stack magazines ensured reliability of feeding with a push feed action. Staggered magazines with a push feed action may occasionally hang up on feeding some rounds. With controlled round feed, it isn't an issue.

So, the only solution with detachable magazines is to have a spare to enable fast reloading. Also, if one hunts with the mentality that they only have the one shot to make good (as I know we all do) then the issue diminishes even further.

Cheers!

Nothing against LR'ers, I myself want/need to get into it, but I would bet that almost all above said LR'ers would prefer a detach, as opposed to more traditional hunters that would like a floor plate.....this is only my consensus.

Re: Do you prefer a hunting rifle with a detachable mag?

I beleive there is no one answer for this it is horses for courses.

I know of a hunter I was hunting with that walked all day only to find a nice deer and when he through the rifle up the magazine had dissapeared. Somewhere during the days stalking he had brushed the rifle against either his webbing or a brush of some kind and it had dislodged the Magazine.

I have hunted with both types and feel in most case the blind magazine is the way to go especial if chasing dangerous game that can and will bite back.

I have also hunted with a detachable magazine in a rifle which was damn near impossible to take the magazine out let alone have it drop out.

For Long range work most times it is a sniper situation and quick follow up shots are gunna be perty hard to get off so a single shot rifle would be the ticket. Single shot rifles usually have a more ridgid action which is required for the accuracy on longer shots. Longer shots meaning over 500yds.

Re: Do you prefer a hunting rifle with a detachable mag?

I like detachable mostly because it is so cold up here that trying to fight with blind mags, even hinge plates in the cold going in and out of the truck in the morning and after the hunt really sucks. Most times the bullets end up in the snow and I have lost a few and I have froze my fingers too many times. Of course for gopher shooting I like the mags too. More bullets that I can quickly get in my gun means more dead gophers.

Detachable magazines make it easier to unload particularly in the dark, but the possibility of losing it during a hunt far out weigh its convenience. I vote NO!
