taking a recoil pad off an hs stock

I have been told you can put a hs stock in the freezer and wack the recoil pad off with a mallet, how hard do you think you need to club the thing? I've beat the heck out of it. You think I should just try and make a straight cut with a band saw?

Well as soon as I posted that alot of helpfull techniques popped up at the bottom of the post. I just wasn't finding them with the search. Thanks Though.
