I did a similar thing but.

I didnt drill i just cut the cross bars i only drilled back into the thick part just before the tang, slid in some hard steel pins/rods then filled with fiberglass and resin, sorry i didnt think of piccys.

    I did a savage stock on an older flatback and the answer I found for mitigating stock flex off the bi pod was to move the swivel stud to the rear by several inches. It made a huge difference and was a very simple quick fix.

    about that stock. I did something similar to a MK2 stock, but haven't finished it yet. Used a saw, but need a belt sander to finish.
