The simplest change would be to a 280 Remington (A 30/06 necked to .284) because there would be no issues with the change , and the 280 Rem is excellent for ranges out to 1000
yards.

The next step up would be the RUMs but this would require opening the bolt face and modifying
the feed rails.

What do plan on doing with this rifle? Also, will you be handloading or using factory loaded ammo?

There are endless choices for a custom depends on what you would be using the rifle for and if you will be reloading for the rifle? Will it be a single shot or a reaper?

What to change it to depends on how you will use it. If you are killing coyotes, an antelope or two and maybe a few deer, a 25-06 chambering is hard to beat. If you are shooting deer-sized game, a .284 or .270 makes sense. If you might tackle an elk, stick to 30-06 or go up to 35 Whelen.

If you will reload, a .284 probably has the most possibilities as there are LOTS of 7mm bullets to choose from. Second choice based on bullet possibilities would be to stay with 30-06 as there are many .30 bullets.

If you will use factory loadings, the .270 or .25-06 are my picks, depending on your uses. Each has available ammunition that isn't over priced & high-quality ammunition is available in most stores.

Tell us more of what you want to do & you will get more specific advice.

J E Custom's advice is always worth heeding. Although I would have to ask what is your intended use?

30.06 is good for everything from ground hogs to elk. You have lots of factory ammo to choose from and if you reload there are lots of bullet choices.
Short of rebarreling your rig, you could follow similar steps taken to accurize your rig as my nephew did...

6.5-06 will get you way out there. Ballistics say still super sonic at 1800.
