Remington 7 actions

Is the remington model seven action as good as the 700 I have a remington modelseven in 308 and would like to use as a doner rifle to build as a tactacal or even a F-class would like to use a wildcat cartridgein the 6.5-7mm area or larger any sugestions would help thanks ,Robster

The model 7 action is just a shorter version of the 700 .

The magazine is the same length as the short action so any round that will fit in the 700 short
action will work in the model 7.

As to the quality as a rule the model 7 action has a little better quality control and is a very
good action.

The down side to the model 7 is custom stocks are harder to find,scope bases are also harder
to find because of the spacing and the older ones only had one rear base screw limiting
you to a one piece base.

You can get a Jewell trigger for them (The best in my opinion) .

They make great doner actions and can be made to shoot really well.

The model 7 is a fine action. The model 700 SA is a fine action too. If you are going to shoot a 308 in F- Class or Tactical the extra lenth of action can be better utilized with longer bullets with higher BC.

The after market accessories are more geared to the model 700 SA also.

Robster, ditto on the Mod 7. A fine short action.

They are not wildcats, but a .260 Rem or a 7mm Rem SAUM would be good candidates. The 7 SAUM would require a bolt with a .535" face and might be difficult to modify to feed. A 6.5 x .284 is a fine long range cartridge, but in the M7 would have to be single loaded, and an unfired round would almost certainly have to be ejected by pulling the bolt and round out the back of the receiver. On the plus side, the .260 Rem and the 6.5 x .284 would work with your .308 bolt, and the .260 would also feed without any modifications. Feeding wouldn't be an issue with the 6.5 x .284 because it could only be single loaded anyway.

I don't know the F-class rules, but if a round doesn't have to feed out of the magazine, the 6.5 x .284 would be my choice for a long range rifle in a short action.
