Recessed Crown?

Is there any downside to a deeply recessed crown?

I am kicking around a rough use, lightweight hunting rifle good for maybe 500 yards only and would like to put a crown on the barrel that protects against damage as much as reasonable.

There's nothing wrong with having a deep crown. The biggest thing is making sure it is cut concentric to the bore. I wouldn't go so deep that you can't clean it though.

What is a reasonable c'bore depth for a protective recessed crown that will still look good?

I normally run a recessed crown .030" deep. I would think doubling that would be more than sufficient and still look acceptable.
