New Stevens 200 Trigger

Just got a "NEW" Stevens 200 in 22-250. I'm new to Savage/Stevens, but I've done a good bit of reading about them. This rifle is NOT like the older ones. It has a thicker, softer recoil pad, and a different trigger. At first I thought it was probably the Edge/Axis trigger, and would be easy to find info to modify it. The little coil spring that everyone replaces or modifies, doesn't have a lot to do with the weight of pull. This one has a "mouse trap" type sear spring that holds a huge amount of pressure on the "sear/notch" contact point. I replaced the trigger return spring(that's really all it does) with a lighter one, and it made no detectable difference to me. I even left the spring out and reset the trigger with my finger, and the pull is still the same as far as I can tell. I don't like "messin" with the sear, other than polishing it a little(which I've already done), but it looks to me that the only way to lighten the pull is to weaken or modify this sear spring, or , yeah, I know, get an RB or Timney. Anyone have any experience with these "NEW" 2013 model 200's ??

Re: New Stevens 200 Trigger

OK,
I broke down and got a RB Sav1. IT WON'T FIT/WORK !!! Contacted Clay Mitchell at RifleBasix. Super nice guy. He was not aware of any design changes, I sent him pics. We'll see in a day or two what that thing is.
In the mean time, I'm gonna try a SAV2 to see if it works. I'm hoping for the best. Customer service at RB is great, I'm glan I chose it even if the sav2 doesn't work. I'm sure they'll help work something out. This looks like a savage experiment. One they didn't want to try on a "true" savage. It also appears that the design is NOT easy to mod like the axis/edge. Probably cheaper to build? China? Who knows.

Re: New Stevens 200 Trigger

when Rifle Basix was a brand new kid on the block I bought a Sav-2 trigger (I think it's been under a couple revisions since), and let me tell you these a a good bunch of folks to do business with. It came with a DVD showing you how to install it and adjust it. Mine is set right at one pound of pull with almost zero creep (maybe a total of .010"). I have had it down to about 12oz., but don't like it that light for field use. But what like best about it is that it seems very safe at low poundage settings unlike some others I've been around.

I'm hoping the sav2 fits OK. We(RifleBasix & myself) haven't figured out yet why the sav 1 won't fit on this trigger. Yeah, they offered me a real good deal to replace the sav1 with a sav 2,,,,if it will fit. Thanks for the reply. Gary

Re: New Stevens 200 Trigger

Thanks, hope you're right. I don't need a "competition benchrest trigger", but I need the triggers on my rifles to be close to the same pull.

Re: New Stevens 200 Trigger

Got the SAV 2. Fits, and works like a charm. Still don't know why the SAV 1 would not fit. Haven't heard from Clay at RB. Savage says what I have is an AXIS trigger. The SAV 1 should have fit. ? I have one fine trigger now, I'm Happy. Thanks for the input Gary
