Modify Other Barrels to Savage Barrel Nut?

Would it be possible to modify take off barrels from other manufacturers, i.e., Remington, Howa, etc., to the Savage barrel nut design to mount to a Savage action. In this case I'm thinking of someone who might have a few wildcats that require fireforming. Takeoff barrels would be good for fire forming and if configured to the Savage barrel nut, a person could use just one action for fireforming several cartridges.

I wouldn,t say it is a bad idea, just impractical and costly.

If you use a Remington barrel you would have to turn the barrel down to 1" and re thread it to 1" 16 TPI

You could take a barrel and cut the tenon off and turn it to 1 1/16th and thread it to 1 1/16 TPI and make a barrel nut if you wanted to convert a Remington or any other action to work like a Savage.

OR you could just buy new savage barrels or take offs.

The main reason that I eliminate the barrel nut is, less moving parts and fit tolerances, You can have
a larger barrel shank (Normally 1.250 or 1.375) that adds strength around the chamber on large cases.
And looks better IMO.

Thanks JE, but this would not be for looks, only function and the only use would be fire forming.

The benefit would be saving wear and tear and throat life on the primary rifle. The question would be... would it be worth it?

Takeoff barrels, whatever they would be, would be reamed with the project reamer.

If a person was going to fire a couple hundred cases or more for a particular rifle, it might be something to consider.

Whats the point of fireforming in a different chamber than the final one in your weapon ? The head space could be different, the reamer could be different, there are so many variables...

I fireform for my 243 AI by shooting a loaded bullet from the rifle. It groups 1/2moa and while velocity may be lower it is pretty consistent. I will hunt with my "fireforming" load.

Actually, a fair number of folks do it including some smiths. The benefit as I mentioned is less wear and tear and on rifle and throat. The idea would be to use the same reamer and headspace guages.

I'm going to set up a couple fire forming barrels soon but instead converting over to a Rem nut situation and removing your main barrel I think it'd be better to just find a 200 dollar savage rifle then reconfigure to a fire forming situation. I'm going to chamber both ends of a 6.5 barrel so I get two different chamberings that I can fire form and I'm only into it one barrel.

Yup, that's exactly what I'm talking about. One Savage action to do all you fireforming with different takeoff barrels.
