Mod Advise for Rem .338

I have a stock Remington .338 BDL SS. Is this rifle worth putting any money in it to improve accuracy? For example should I put in a custom trigger or any other modifications, or should I just go out and build a new rifle from scratch?

Any suggestions are welcome.

Does it not shoot very well at this point? If not, how bad is it doing.

I would find it difficult to believe that the rifle as from the factory, with a little load workup, wouldn't be sufficiently accurate for LRH?

The first money I'd consider spending on it would be a muzzle brake unless you are using lower end loads such as 225gr bullets. I shoot nothing but 300gr SMKs in mine and really appreciate the brake. In fact it was a necessity for me (a real wimp:o) even with 225s and 250s. It didn't affect accuracy one way of the other but sure made my life more enjoyable.;)

It depends on how well it shoots now.

If its a factory rifle with nothing done to it and it
will shoot 1" groups then I would pillar bed the action
and free float the barrel remingtion trigers are good and
can be adjusted to about 2 lbs safely.

This can be done for around $100.00.

If you have a gunsmith that can re crown ,bed and float
this will cost $300.00 to $4oo.oo dollars

If it shoots more than 2" groups it probably needs a premium
barrel and all the above.About $600.00

If you add a new stock and triger your talking about
$1000.00 to $1200.00 dollars.

A custom rifle will cost from $1800.00 ( you furnish the action )
To $3000.00 or more depending on your requirments.

Right now I get about 1" to 1.5" groups with the rifle.

What JE Said plus a little.

Definitely do the pillar bed thing and free float the barrel which will be done regardless of what you do with the barrel changes.

I'd complete the above before burning more powder and sending bullets.

I you can't do the bedding yourself, its pretty straight forward, and have a smith do it, have him recrown it at the same time.

You'll know for sure what you have after that.
