mod 70 rebarrel to .300wm

Got a win 70 in .30-06 that I have been thinking about having rebuilt to a .300wm and reamed for 210-215 Bergers I know bolt head will need replaced. Is the .300 And the .06 brass the same length? Magazine length on .06 to short for coal for .300 with the bergers? Looking at shooting single shot with that set up?
Or is it better to rebuild to .30-06AI or 280AI?
The .06 needs some work anyway so throwing out possible ideas and looking for some experienced opinions. Could sell or trade for Savage in a .300. Thanks in advance

Re: mod 70 rebarrel to .300wm

I shoot a Pre 64 Mdl 70 in 30-06 that I just rebuilt and kept it a 06. Was thinking just like you but after a lot of research decided against the 300 WM because of the short magazine. Both the 06 and the 300 have a 3.340 OAL but if you want to use the heavy bullets Bergers, Accubond etc and set them out to get the full potential of the round then the magazine restrictions ruin it. My smith talked me out of building a 06AI as the gain to me was not worth the extra work reloading. Also did a lot of research and to enlarge the magazine was very difficult and could find no one who wanted to fool with it including my smith.

Yes, to both, However, having a long action WSM really opens up the potential!

I had my ol' Winchester Model-70 (push feed) 30-06 turned into a 300WSM.
Open up the bolt face (also had it fluted)
Fluted 26" Hart #4 contour 10 twist
Throated for 200gr Accubonds
Mini Muscle brake
Pillar Bedded
Smith had to do some tinkering to get the bottom metal dialed, & get it feeding right. 3+1 configuration.

There's some work involved, but Well worth it for the performance gain of a Long Action WSM.

I'm flingin 180 Accubonds into sub half MOA 3shot groups at over 3100fps. (Which is faster than my factory Win-70 24"bbl 300Wby.

Winmag did you use the smith in Bend Or can't think of his name at the moment John I believe is his first name. You have it throated for 200gr accubond have you tried 210-215Bergers or is the throat to short for those?
I could even go with .280AI as well as .270AI very nice rifle by the way.

Winmag out of curiosity are you the one that has the pic of your win .300 in a light tan manners then switched to darker green color? That may have been a full length .300WM.
This is giving me some food for thought I could even go with 7mm short mag as well. Decisions decisions thanks for the information
