Recoil pads:
1) distribute recoil over more area
2) more evenly average the pressure over that area by compliance to body shape.
3) distribute recoil over the time it takes to compress the pad t = crush/ peak rifle recoil velocity
All these attempt to keep the pressure on skin at all points and times to stay under the ~ 150 psi threshold of pain.
Use the fashionable high heel of a woman's shoe for a rifle butt [smaller area] and you will see what I mean.
