Best way to remove tape "goo" from barrel?

I have a Savage MKII .22lr that I'm restoring. The barrel and exterior of tenction were wrapped in camp tape for the last 5 years. Now, there is a bunch of adhesive ("goo") on the metal. What can I use to get it off?

Really just about any adhesive remover or solvent should do the trick. Sometimes old tape adhesive can be pretty stubborn so you may need to use something fairly aggressive. Probably start out with some goo-gone. If that doesnt do it then try brake cleaner, if still no luck maybe lacquer thinner. I dont think any of these will hurt the bluing but i would probably remove the action from the stock to prevent any unwanted finish damage. After you are done i would use your favorite gun oil on the bluing, burchwood casey makes a product called barricade which also works nice on blued surfaces. Good luck.

WD-40 will do it or Goo-Gone which is sold at Wal-mart etc. Just put a little on a rag and wipe it on and it will take the tape goo right off.

Goo-Gone followed by Acetone to get rid of the residual Goo-Gone.
