7mm Dakota

I am interested in possibly building a 7mmDakota for LR hunting. I've looked at the ballistcs and am very impressed, but the price of a new rifle from Dakota Arms is a little steep.

What I can not find on the web are the case or chamber dimensions. If anyone has these, could they please post them or send them my way?

Saw your post and have a similar project in mind. Have you made any progress? I am considering necking down the 270 or 7 dakota to 6.5 in order to shoot bergers 140 VLDs. One reason I like the dakota is overall cartridge length is between the RUM and WSM. I like to use the HS precision detachable mag and the 6.5 properly seated in the WSM case to maximize powder capacity is to long for the short action, and seated in the RUM is to long for the the long action.(Besides necking down the RUM seems to overbored for me anyway.) The 6.5 seated in the dakota case would appear to maximize the case for powder and load development yet leave plenty of room for the loaded round in the magazine. It would also be great to ackerize the case with a straighter case and sharper shoulder. I have however been unable to locate much info at all about the dakota rounds or any wildcats based on that family of cartridges. I understand the cases are expensive and therefore probably pushing people away from serious long range load development. I would appreciate any info you come across. Thanks.

I did a wildcat based off the 300 and 330 Dakota necked down to 7mm with a 40 degree shoulder and minimal taper--- if I had it to do over again, would have went with a 35 deg shoulder with more taper, as with hot loads have seen extraction problems which seem to just pop up without warning. As such, I tend to load the cartridges about 75 fps below a sticky bolt lift. My 140 accubonds are loaded to 3350 and have over 8 reloadings with the 330 brass.
Some of Kirby Allens smaller Xpress cartridges are based off the 300Dakota.
The Norma brass used in the 7Dak and 330Dak are very consistent; however, they tend to be soft, so if you want to keep the cases around you will not be able to load them very hot. The 300Dak is not made by Norma, Dakota is in the process of having Hornady make the 300 brass.

I know Kirby has a tight-tolerance (no-neck turn-maybe a smidget of clean-up) reamer, since he built my 7mm Dakota XP-100.
Very pleased with its performance.
Used for LR hunting, steel and most recently a LR pd off of a bipod (1454 yards). You can have a rifle built a lot cheaper by one of the guys here on the forum rather than DA. It all depends on what you want.

I`m trying too find some info and I`m looking in to putting a rifle together

around a wildcat ( 6.5-7mm dakota ). If anyone knows anything or something

about this cartridge please email me at ( retreadfred@yahoo.com ). The

reason I`m looking in to it, it looks like it might fit into the Rem. titanium action

which a .30-06 will fit, at total cartridge length of 3.35" . The dakota cartridge

is a little bigger than the WSM cartridge`s and a little smaller than the RUM

cases. The ( 7mm Ultra mag.) case looks to be about the same size capacity

as the case for John Lazzeroni`s big ( 6.71 blackbird ). The ( 6.5 STW ) built

by Layne Simpson ( one of the best hunting gun writers ) uses the ( 375 h&h )

magnum sized 3.65" action which is alright but I`m trying to go small and

light for an easy carry rifle for sheep. I`m 51 now and not getting any

younger so I`m going light.......LOL......Please email me if you know anything
