Re: Czech Sniper Competition

Interesting info and images. Could you give us a rough description of the optics and maybe what makes of rifles were used. I recognize some Schmidts but others are ?. Neat method of attaching the spotting scope, definitely going to try that one. Obviously Zeiss won a few tenders for supplying optics to some of the agencies represented. Never thought of going bigger for the tripod, been searching for a sturdy, steady smaller one tho.

    Ian,

70 percent would be Sako TRG 22 with S&B 4-16 or 3-12 PMII. Czech URNA use SSG 3000`s, Russian Alpha team had AI`s I think, Germans - G22`s (AI`s in 300 Win Mag)and last year a couple of DSR 1`s. Noticed a couple of FN Ultima Ratio rifles - the one I looked at had a 8x optic on it - Russian looking. A couple of Blaser LSR 2`s as well. The Cz 700 Sniper M1 rifle with S&B in the pic is my loaner rifle.

Optics - really S&B land, one Hungarian had a Nightforce NXS and I think I saw a few Leupolds and Zeiss VMV`s / Hensold scopes.

Spotting scopes - tried the Zeiss set up, I prefer my Optolyth TBS 100 on a Ray Vin tripod, also Ewing tripods impressed me and may be better (both small).

    David.

    David,

Blimey, you've done rather better on the ID than I would have done! (didn't realise that the FNs weren't Hecates when 308 !)...pretty sure there was an SV-98 or two knocking about there too.

    Ewen,

Did you get my 2 emails? Your software seems to bounce them.

    David and Matt,
Thanks both for some interesting info. Seeing all that gear and the shooting positions etc. is very enjoyable. Glad that you guys enjoyed yourselves.

I am surprised there is not more steel target use in such events, we setup some very challenging shots with our steel plates. You either hit the thing and knock it over or miss.

    Hi Ian,

On a military style comp just before the plod one we used steel gongs as UKD targets, the range was in a valley, it is sort of nice to spot the hits and wait for the sound report of the hit after.

At the plod comp the targets are electric fallers and risers on timers - quicker to run with 100+ competitors but not so imaginative.

    David.
