Redtail Hawk

Here is a hawk I found on Cape Cod last week. It was sitting on a birdhouse, one of 10 in a yard near the road. It seemed to be shopping for breakfast.

I love it when I am out hunting somewhere and high above me I can hear the screaming call of a soaring redtail.

I guess every one else is too tactful to comment on what a raggedy, scraggly hawk that is. Must have been molting.

Just getting a little crazy waiting on hunting season to get here. We are now down to 29 days until dove season starts.

I really didn't know redtail hawks ventured that far north. I thought they were more of a southern species. I am just guessing it is a mature bird molting because the tail has color on it and I seems to remember (perhaps incorrectly) that the young ones do not get adult plummage until the second year.

Speaking of bad hair day, I just remembered this Redtail picture series from a few years ago.
