Re: Are CVA muzzel loaders safe???

If you're looking for a side hammer, you won't have any problems with CVA. The only problems that ......... I ..... know of with CVA, was a bad run back in I believe the late 80's or early 90's. CVA doesn't have concerns with their current mid to top end models, side hammers or inlines.

They're good rifles and I've owned many of them in the past. However I don't shoot CVA any more after T/C came out with the Encore platforms.

You can buy used but, unless you have a bore scope, you could be taking a chance on how well it was taken care of (side hammer). If its an inline you're looking at, its much easier to tell what the barrel looks like, by removing the breech plug.

If at all possible, I would highly recommend buying new. There are many different manufacturers who are building quality muzzleloaders, both side hammers and inlines at very reasonable prices. You can spend just about as much as you would like. Buying new, pretty much concludes you're getting a rifle with no problems. When you buy used, they have to be personally handled (IMO) and completely reviewed for problems, especially that barrel.

Hope this helps.

Re: Are CVA muzzel loaders safe???

cva's are just as safe as any other muzzleloader out there. They had a recall on the inlines made in 1995 and 1996 " Last 2 digits in serial # start with 95 or 96" but other than that, they are fine and ready to go.

That muzzleloader in the link is greatly over priced. I built a 58cal cva hawken with a douglas barrel for $300.

Re: Are CVA muzzel loaders safe???

I had a mid 90's CVA Appollo 50 cal inline, they had a barrel recall in which they sent my dad, uncle, and myself new barrels free of charge. We shot the snot out of those muzzleloaders without any problems. Try and ask the seller if the barrel has been replace due to recall if it is the model like I had, they may give you an honest answer but I'm sure you could contact CVA and find out if it has been recalled in the past. I own an CVA Optima now and am loving this MZ.
