Custom smokeless Savage .45cal

I started with a Savage .243Win package gun from Gander Mountain and added an HS Precision varmint stock, 26" 1:22 twist PacNor 45cal barrel, Rifle Basix trigger, 20MOA base, quick release rings, Bushnell 6500 Elite Tactical scope, custom breech plug to use shortened 308 cases as primer carriers, and a single shot follower.

It throws 200gr Shockwaves at 2770 fps with a duplex load of AA5744/H322. First load I tried, and I'm sticking with it.

On to 300 and perhaps 400 yds next weekend, if I have time.

What else do you want to know? I haven't shot it a lot yet, just over the chrono and that one group. I use Federal Large Rifle Magnum primers. I used QR rings so I can access the barrel nut easily, switching back to the factory 243 barrel if I want to shoot coyotes. Although that little sporter barrel looks a little silly in that big varmint stock!

I just have never herd of any one doing something like this. I like when people thing out side the box. I dont know much about muzzle loaders, I dont own one, but I like what you have attempted. Do you know other people that have done this with a rifle? Bill Maylor..

Bill,

Yes: Doug's Message Boards - Home

This is where I learned all I needed to know and found someone who had designed the breechplug and convinced a machinist to make them, as well as worked with PacNor to make the barrels available in stock.

People are doing the same thing with other actions, but of course the Savage action with barrel nut makes it a lot easier and cheaper for us DIY types.

Re: Custom smokeless Savage .45cal

I like the 308 cases, i seen simalar thing done with ultimate muzzle loaders. the video they had it seem real easy to take the primed casess in and out for primeing instead of mess with a little disc.
