.22-243 pushing 52SMK @ 4100.

Re: What's your caliber of choice, for coyotes?

My first post on this site, I've used it for a long time for info but decided to join.
I shoot .223 50-55gr vmax for 100 to 250rd shots, 7mm rem-mag with 120gr vmax for over 250, and #4buck for out to 70.
Great site, thanks.

6mm Remington ,I have taken coyotes out to 750 yards and the fur damage is minimal with berger vld hunting bullets.

I have found that the .243 just works. I own many rifles, all sizes, shapes and colors but keep going to the .243 when we sit and call. I always "jump" and walk a section with my 18" AR.

Coyote Pelts are going for $30 each and when you take four one day that's $120 So I don't like to see an exit hole. I will be using my .19 Badger and the 32gr Calhoon Double Hollow point at 3500 That usually always means a .196 entrance hole and NO exit hole, also works great of Bobcats to...............Now I have yet to use it on Gray Fox but my son live about 60 miles away and has a lot of Grays in his neck of the woods..........................we will see what happens might have to use a reduced load at 2000 or try the 17HMR.................

I'd like to shoot one of those 19 Badgers. What's the range on them as far as effectively killing coyotes ? Excluding reduced loads and without regulars to pelt damage.

Re: What's your caliber of choice, for coyotes?

I see people are getting concerned with pelt damage. Of all the calibers that I have either seen or used; the least or no damage to pelts are these.
20 tactical, 20 Vartarg, 204 Ruger, 17 Remington, 17-222 Rem Mag, 17-222 Rem, 223 Rem, 221 FB, 222 Rem, 17 Mach4/17 FB, and 22-250 with starting loads under a 50 to 60 grain slug.
For longer ranges the 243 and 6MM rem with 68 to 75 grain slugs and reduced loads seem to work very well.
The 257 Roberts and 25-06 with 75 grain slugs do put a sledge hammer to the yotes but their pelts are not worth a darn once you put the hammer to them. Non-pelt season is the only time I use the 257 Rob or 25-06. With the bumper crop of yotes this year in western NV I will be taking lots of yotes with either my 17 Rem or 22-250.
later....
Fred
