Re: Larger caliber AR for coyotes?

I have bean thinking real hard about an ar-15 in 6x45 (223 necked to 6mm) Researched it a bit and it looks like a sweet option with standard bolt, mags and a little more thump without blowing anything up. Might look into that as well.

Re: Larger caliber AR for coyotes?

I have a 1&7 twist barrel and shoot the 75g and 80g A-max . longest shot has only been 250 but everyone has been a bam flop. If going to a 6mm I think I would want something more than a 6x45. But that is just me.

Re: Larger caliber AR for coyotes?

I can't understand the notion of 223 not being enough for 40-50lb coyotes under 300yrds. I've shot many coyotes and have only seen 2 that didn't drop instantly from a 223 and those 2 didn't make it more than 30yrds. If you're just looking for the WOW factor in blowing them up then go with the AR10 in 308 and use ballistic tips. The AR10 will work well on deer also.

300 yards, 223 great round. 600 yard, 223 ok round. 600 yards with wind, 223 sucks. Aint sayin it cant be done but................... could be done better and easier with allot of "other" rounds...................I have had coyotes down at 20 yards with marginal hits jump back up and take off never to be seen again. Where are you finding 50lb coyotes? Ours are 30-40.

Re: Larger caliber AR for coyotes?

I built a 6.5 Grendel with a 24" barrel, Muzzle Brake, Jewel trigger, on a bushmaster lower. I've been shooting Hornady 123gr A-Max factory loaded bullets. I have over 200 once fired cases now and will be reloading with Sierra 120gr Matchkings. So far this caliber has exceeded my expectations.

I have a DCM Compasslake match service rifle 1/7 barrel and have competed in matches to 600 yds for the past 15 years. It's a custom build with open sights. It still shoots great.

My 3rd AR is a 1/8, 24" barrel Varminter. It likes 75gr Hornady Match bullets. I've taken coyotes and jackrabbits with it out to 700yds. Reading the wind is extremely critical.

That said, I built the 6.5 Grendel over the 6.8 SPC because beyond 400yds it's shoots flatter and handles the wind better. I've shot out to 800yds consistently with excellent accuracy. It's on a Bushmaster lower. The benefit is I can switch uppers if I choose and have taken 3 uppers into the field several times.

When it comes to shooting accurately at long distance the 6.5 is hard to beat.
