first coyote i called in

I finlley called a coyote in after 3 years off hunting them , but missed hit a dead branch about the size of a silver dollar . that i didn't see and was a black coyote to boot

i have been calling coyotes for 2 years now and i finally had my first double come in mid january. A really really big male, beautiful silver fur followed by a mid sized (guessing female) also very nice pelt. They stopped for a second and all i could see was the top of his head so i waited cause the direction they were moving was right into an open field at about 150 yards max and they only had to go about another 15 yards and i would ahve a clear shot. I let them continue on and they never went into the field and disappeared!

Wow, bummer, Yamadog.... But congrats on getting one into range. Wish it would've ended better for you but that experience ought to keep you going for a whiile! I've never called a black phase coyote but we did see one near our home. They aren't near as common out west as they are back east.

Just keep that set up in mind for next winter. They'll probably come back, but my experience has been "forget the rest of this season". Ain't as easy as it looks on TV is it?

Congratulations! Nothing like bringing that first dog in, especially after a long dry spell. Keep at it - predator hunting can require a lot of patience, and it can get really frustrating if you watch those hunting dvds where guys are in some coyote rich part of the country killing dozens of them.

Here in WI, they're a trophy animal for a lot of us - you spend a lot of time out in the fields, with nothing coming in, all for that one day when you get a yote racing in to the call.
