a 22 mag will work fine at sane distances, i would shoot them in the head whenever possible though

I live to the north of you and I used my 22 mag to kill 6 coyotes last year. All were chest shots.

No, it's not too small, and hit them anwhere you can! It's all how you look at it. I shoot a 223 varmint AR during critter callin, but have taken a few for fun with a 17mach 2 (they will keep running, but eventually tip over). You have to remember that the others will kill an injured yote, all ya gota do is draw a good amount of blood. Your 22mag will work great under 200yrds, not really worth dropping the cash to buy an exclusive varmint rifle, unless the bug gets ya and more rifles is in your future!

Re: .22 MAG too small for coyotes???

There was a thread on here a few days ago that a guy showed a coyote he had shot with the new personal defense ammo from Hornady and he said it put the dog down. The picture actually showed quite a bit of blood (I'm assuming from the exit hole) coming out of one of its shoulder.

I loved the 30 grain V Max from Hornady in my 22 mag, but the new Hornady personal defense rounds or the CCI 40 grain gamepoints would probably be what I'd take for coyotes.
