Contender in 223

I acquired a Contender recently in 223 with a 10 inch barrel. Anybody else shooting this caliber? Was wondering what bullet you are using? Thanks.

The 223 barrel was my first one back in 81.. 10" bull. I shoot 55 gr bulk remingtons and 55gr cast.

I've been shooting the 40 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. I load Win cases, BR4 primers, and 22.5 grs of IM4-4198, with COL 2.260". This load is a tad over the listed MAX and is fine in my pistol, but you should work up to it from 19 or so. I haven't chronographed the load, but it should be around 2950 FPS.

I read an article a long time ago that indicated only fast burning powders and light bullets shot well in the 10" barrel. If I do my part with the above load, I get sub 1" groups at 100 yards.

do you know your barrel twist. 1 in 9 = 55 to 60 grain, 1 in 8= 70 to 80 grain. faster twist fatter boolites. ps. i have 6 encores- 3 pistols, 2 rifles, 1 M.L. welcome to the dark side!!!!

Thanks for the input everyone. I reload for a variety of firearms. Since I haven't seen much info on the contender I figured I'd ask what other people are using. Gives me an idea of where I might want to start.

try (loadbooks about $6.00) they have a volume 1 & 2 load date for the contender pistol.
