3 hole base on a 4 hole pistol

There seems to be more three hole bases than four hole bases for xp-100's does it matter is i use a three hole on a four? or could I have a gunsmith switch it to a remington 700 screw spacing

Three screws should hold your base just fine unless you are using a very heavy recoiling caliber. In that case, the TSOB mount with three rings and four screws are your best bet.Don't use the Redfield style mounts on the hard kickers,as they pull the rear mounts out of the base.I learned all this the hard way with a .444 Contender.
