Re: Whats everyone\'s fav. .308 LR load??
Ian,
I have a remington 700. My max length to fit into the mag well is 2.821. What rifle do you use that will allow 2.830?
By the way, I found this website about a year ago as a result of an article you wrote that referenced this site. Thanks!

Re: Whats everyone\'s fav. .308 LR load??
Favorite .308 load is 42 gr. of IMR 4064, 168 SMKs, lapua brass, federal 210m primer. For my 20" bbl, this load tracks the federal gold medal in 168 gr extremely close out to about 600 yds.

Re: Whats everyone\'s fav. .308 LR load??
What is interesting is that I tried the IMR4064load that worked for Sandman and had dismal performance from my Savage at all the COALs I tried. It's nice to know that that load was a logical choice to try, but I am always amused when a load that is great for one gun doesn't work in another. It always leaves me scratching my head and trying to figure out how to predict what will work in a certain rifle without burning out a barrel and going through a thousand bucks worth of components to find the sweet load. I have a friend who also shoots three-position matches. He found a load that was better than him and stopped there and loaded 2K rounds of it. I have loads that are better than his (off a rest at least), and I still feel that I have to try a new recipe every now and again, just in case they might be a little better.

Re: Whats everyone\'s fav. .308 LR load??
For all around use, IMR4064 and a Sierra MK loaded .005" off the lands. 155s, 168s, & 175s. This has worked for me in a variety or rifles from 100-1,000 yards.
Chessman, for your Savage try a 165gr Nosler Ballistic Tip & Varget. I worked one up for a buddy recently & it was a .5MOA load that'd work great for deer.

I am loading 165 gr Nosler Ballistic Tips, 45.5 gr Varget, Fed 210M in Black Hills brass. 1/2" or less from my Savage 10FP.

Successfully copied the 168 Lapua factory load with 165BT, 45gr V N140, Fed 210M, 56.7mm OAL-to-ogive (using Stoney Point Comparator).
(In the pic, 100m target,my load on the left, Lapua factory on the right)
Just got back from a successful week's hind culling in Scotland with this load (West of Invermoriston if you read this Derek!); will post more details when my stalking partner sends me a CD of the pics.
