Varget or IMR 4064... can't be beat.

Re: what's the best powder for 22-250

I have used varget with good results, but H-380 is my preferred powder for the 22-250. I shoot mostly 52 grain A-max in mine with 38.5 grains of h-380. This is a mild 1/2 moa load at about 3600fps in my rifle. I think I can load up to 41 grains if I really want to get them going but, I figure barrel life is better with 38.5. Varget is more temperature stable, but h-380 is a little more accurate and much easier to measure, particularly if you are loading up a lot of rounds for a prairie dog shoot.

I agree with a lot of the above but if you want to shoot 36grn VGs and 40grn NBTs, varget, 4064, and 380 are to slow imo. Also light bullets aren't barre burners, actually the opposite. I'm not a big Alliant fan but you can't beat RE10x using 36 and 40grn pills, it gives turbocharged velocities and bughole accuracy. I could hit 4330 with 36grns of 10x under a 40grn NBT, but I settled at 35.5 for that load at 4245, and 4030 from a friends 19" barreled sako.

h380 was the powder designed just for the 22250 and does a great job. Benchmark and varget work well as do 335, 748 and blc2. But if push came to shove and i could only have one it would be 380

Re: what's the best powder for 22-250

Yes H380 was given its name by the owner of hodgdon when the 22-250 was a wildcat because he could load 38.0grns of it under a 55grn sp and put 3 shots practically in one hole, so he called it 380, but its about the same burn rate as RE15 which is slow for light bullets, and its dirty. If you want two good powders by hodgdon that fit the best for your app then IMR3031 and benchmark fit the best. If you step up to 50-60grainers then Imr4064, varget, and H4895 fit the bill.
