What powder for 30-06 Ackley?

I have a 30-06AI with a 25" match grade Shilen barrel. I have been shooting 150 gr moly coated ballistic tips and all I can get without pressure signs is 3050 fps. I'm thinking that I might get more efficient use of this cartridge with a 180 gr bullet (probably ballistic tip or SST). What powders would you guys recommend trying to maximize velocity? Thanks! Sam

Re: What powder for 30-06 Ackley?

Well, with 60.6 gr of W760 in a standard .30-06 I am getting 3030 fps out of a factory Browning stalker, 24" barrel, with 165 gr NBT. You may want to try Ramshot Hunter, IMR/H 4831 or maybe as slow as WXR or MagPro. To me, the Hunter powder looks promising as it fills the gap between H/IMR 4350 and H/IMR 4831 with a spherical powder.

I would try RL-22 as my first choice, especially with the 180 gr pills. With the 150 gr bullets I would use H-4831 or RL-19 as my first options.

What pressure signs are you getting by the way???

Are your primer pockets staying good and tight and if so for how many firings per case???

Re: What powder for 30-06 Ackley?

Thanks guys. I have W760, IMR 4831, RL 19 and RL 22 on hand. I have been using RL 19 for 150 gr (seemed to group better than 4350IMR). Without looking up my data, I think I am using 62 gr of RL19 behind the 150 gr Ballistic tip. 3050 fps with no pressure signs. Seated 0.015 off the rifling. I have gotten 3200 fps with this bullet but with flattened primers, shiny case head and some cratering. Too hot!
