What to do now.....???223

Ok,Help me out here boys...Shooting my 223 today I noticed a huge different
in accuracy...Everything is the same, except I had to use cci 400 standard
primers as I have no more magnum primers...My load was 25 grain of Varget
.same bullet-OAL-brass-etc...I had no idea that primers had that much effect
on accuracy..So without the mag.primers what do you suggest I do to get the
accyracy back....Thanks

well you might think about this, my understanding is a mag primer is = 1.5gn of powder, correct me if I'm wrong, and a standard primer is = to 1gn of powder please check this info for yourself to be sure! I don't know for sure but you might try to up your powder by.5gn and see if that put you back to where you were? I maybe totally off on this but you might try it! JMO

And just where did you hear this at? Sounds like a possiblity...I kind of thought about doing that, but I am not much of a fan of compressed loads..I suppose it is worth a shot...I use 25 grains of Varget and my son is running his load 26....Both 223 cal...I appreciate your reply...

I have read this in the past! altho I can't remember for sure! you also could try a faster burning powder, I know when I use CCI primers I lose about 60fps over the Winchester primers which = about .5gn's of powder from my 24'' 1in10 twist 308 barrel with 175gn SMK's

let me ask what rifle rig are you running? I shoot a Savage mod 12FLV w/a 26''HB I have used allot of Varget thru the barrel with 69gn Nosler CC, and 69gn SMK's and 68gn Hornady with 26gn's of Varget with Win small rifle primers and they ave between 3000 & 3100 fps and are safe in my rifle with no pressure signs I've also used H4895 25.5gn's that ave 3050fps, I'm currently using H322 with 22.5 to7gns @2900fps with the 69gn Noslers CC, and I really like this powder over Varget and it also has a faster burn rate and is more accurate from my rifle, just askin

Buy more of the primers you load developed with, or re-load develop with different primers -and buy plenty of what works there.

I found that using a magnum RIFLE primer in a 44 Remington Magnum was worth about 1.5 grains of H110/Win. 296 but I doubt very much this would apply in switching between small rifle and small rifle magnum primers. In the later case, I doubt there would be any discernible pressure differences between the two.

You need to start probably 1 grains below where you were with the small rifle magnum primers and work up again. You could end up being a bit over what your previous load was. You may hit a new sweet spot and you may not.
