Re: Savage 111 LRH 6.5-284 Loading Questions

Thanks for the tip. I have the 116 stainless and it has a 24 inch fluted barrel. As stated I was using the HV100 and it works but man its not temp stable. I will be trying the retumbo out soon. If I could switch all my guns over to retumbo I would. I don't know what I would use in my wifes 243 though. I suspect I would have to go to something in a heavier bullet. Guns I own...300 ultra, 6.5x284norma (savage) and the wifes 243. Another thing most of us look at this 6.5 as a deer gun but I seen on a hunting show were this guy dropped his bull moose with the little 6.5er. He did put 2 shots in it but the first one stopped him in his tracks and the second pushed him over. I think the range was something around 600yrds also. I've also seen an old couple years back episode of Bst of the Wst...Mike and Aaron still hosting with someone else behind the rifle take an elk at some extreme range like 800 to 900 yrds. Watching some of these shots made a believer out of me that the 6.5 is a capable gun. Thanks again.

Re: Savage 111 LRH 6.5-284 Loading Questions

I used 57.5 in temps at 10f and 4000 ft. I switched to 56.5 as it performed a bit better in my rifle later. I think i was the edge with pressure as my rifle appears to have a tight chamber. I did use it in temps from 30 to 80 so far. No pressure signs at this point with 56.5.

24" barrel. I have been using federal 210m primers as well. Shooter is set with 2970 fps and it has good elevation-wise.

Re: Savage 111 LRH 6.5-284 Loading Questions

Just going to give a little update here. In desperation to find a load accurate enough to use in season (Oct. 26) I have been trying everything to try to get my 111 LRH to shoot sub MOA. I've worked with the torque on the action screws, seating depths, charge weigh, switching powders, I even took the scope and rings off and remounted everything to be sure it was all right. I had all but given up on the Berger VLD hunting and was trying to find some nosler BT's to try. then I thought, why not try jamming the VLD since that is the only thing I haven't tried. At first I seated them to the lands and only had one flyer out of a 5 shot group with the other three cutting holes. Flyers have been the problem. I then seated them at .01" jam and shot a .45" group with 0 flyers. I loaded some more of these tonight. Hopefully I will have no more flyers. I was afraid that jamming them might pull a load apart on me in the field. I loaded one round and ejected it a few times without pulling the bullet. Tomorrow ill put the calipers on it to see if it grew any.

Will update after more shooting. Wish me luck

When you say .005 jam you mean longer than your oaL gauge?? So jam it I to lands??
